A hydraulic passenger lift, also known as an elevator, is a vertical transportation device designed to move people or goods between different floors within a building. Unlike traction elevators, hydraulic lifts operate on the principle of fluid pressure to lift and lower the elevator car. The basic components of a hydraulic passenger lift include a pump, a fluid reservoir, a cylinder, and an elevator car. When a passenger initiates a call for the lift, the hydraulic pump forces hydraulic fluid into the cylinder, causing the piston to move upward, thus lifting the elevator car.
